NEVER PAY TO BE LISTED ON A SITE OR FOR CASTING CALL NOTICES
GDouglas 10-17-2006, 03:00 AM

If anyone asks you for money to be listed on a website or to pay for casting notices they are a scam....

You can get Casting Notices free on Craigslist.org or Mandy.com

And you can also get them in your local papers both free papers and regular newspapers.......

NEVER EVER PAY MONEY OUT OF POCKET FOR ANYTHING!!!!
REMEMBER NEVER WORK FOR FREE AND NEVER PAY TO WORK!

Except if you are going to buy head shots and pictures from photographer you know or one that is a la git photographer with studio.. for your resumes and such.

Not true...

Mandy.com and Craigslist are no where near as legit or comprehensive as Nycastings.com or Backstage.com (basically an industry standard), both of which are sites you must pay to use. Sometimes you do in fact have to pay money to make money. No major casting director would ever look to Craigslist for talent, but they post on NYCastings and Backstage and Actors Access all the time...really. I've gotten great jobs off of those sites--network tv, major motion pictures, and all sorts of modeling jobs.

Also, sometimes it makes sense to work for free if you're looking to build your portfolio or resume.

What I am saying is 100% true and you have no clue as to what you are talking about....

And you have some nerve disrespecting me and saying I am lieing!
When it is you who has no clue as to what you are talking about!

NEVER WORK FOR FREE its disrespected in the industry you are taking money out of working actors and models mouths and going against the business...

Why would they hire a working actor and pay them when they can get a fool to act and work for free?? Why buy a cow when you get the milk for free????

And you are a sucker and a fool if you do work for free... You spend your money on food and gas and you are saying your time is worth nothing....

I have gotten several jobs from the free sites... You probably work for Nycastings.com or Backstage.com and your part of the scam!

I have been in the business over 30 years..

Also the sites that want you to pay for casting calls normally have the same casting calls that are on the free webs sites like craigslist.org and mandy.com or you can find in your local newspaper.....

Also I have had some of my professional well known actor friends who I will not name drop but that are someone who is known. Including my acting teacher when I first started told me never ever pay money out of your own pocket.....

And you're wrong!!! I have even been to agencys and they signed me with a none exclusive contract and they get a % of the job they get you you never ever pay money out of pocket.......

The same with exclusive contracts never pay them out of pocket they will take a % of the job they get you....

And to prove you wrong you can look at my web site and 95% of the jobs I have on my resume are from Craigslist and Mandy.com or the News paper.

The Movie Two Weeks with Sally Feild came from craigslist, So did Following her Heart with Ann Marget. and the T-money Video I have on my site that I did. so did most of the jobs I have on my resume.......

NEVER PAY MONEY TO WORK FOR SOMEONE AND NEVER WORK FOR FREE AND NEVER GIVE MONEY OUT OF POCKET TO ANYONE....

Unless you want to be broke and disrespected in the business.......

All real agencys will take a % of what you make for the job they get you at the time they get it for you and you are ready to be paid.

I live in Hollywood CA and I find the most legit castings are on Lacasting, Actors Access, Mymodeltalk, and Nowcasting. Criaglist is okay but you have to be cautious towards postings there. I don't know what Mandy.com is so I have no comment there. Nevertheless I can see how in Tennessee it's probably useless to use these sites since they mainly tailor to New York and Los Angeles. However, there was absolutely no need to get so upset at Lyndsey for making a valid point. It's really up to the person in the long run, you can ask most working actors in LOS ANGELES and I guarantee that they atleast use Actor's Access since it's a direct relation to the actual BREAKDOWNS that come out everyday, they're the same company. I agree that other then the sites listed (plus backstage) the rest are all scams and a waste of money.

No, I don't work for any of these companies I just think it wasn't a good idea to tell fellow actors to rely on Craigslist. Maybe in Tennessee Craigslist has a better reputation but in LA and NY it's not the most reliable for the big jobs.

It's also okay for people to work on projects for free when they're starting up, it helps to build your reels and resume. I haven't done so, but I would recommend it to a newbie trying to gain expierence.

Thanks, Tiffany (you're gorgeous, by the way)...

And no offense to you Gary, but I'll point out for the sake of everyone else reading your post, that your 30 years of credits include 2 Jerry Springer appearances, a lot of background work, and a pie in the face...which is fine--there's nothing wrong with that, but I make my living solely as an actor. I have no other job. And replying to posts off of Craigslist for $100 jobs, isn't going to pay my rent.

I've done featured work (not just background) on major network television, major studio films, and commercials. And though, I've been acting for life, I've only done it professionally for months; yet I've still gotten big work, big pay, and my SAG card all without an agent. NYCastings.com, Backstage.com, and ActorsAccess.com work...really.

Though I'd obviously never pay an agent, I definitely recommend paying for subscriptions to these sites if you're looking to freelance as a professional actor.
